Doing this for a parent
Six in ten people who look into care are doing it for a parent, usually a daughter. Three things help.
- Run the check yourself first, choosing “My mum or dad”. Rough figures are fine. Then you know the shape of things before the conversation.
- Start with the powers of attorney, not the money. Almost everyone agrees that someone should be able to deal with the bank and the house if they cannot. It costs £92 each on GOV.UK and can be done together at the kitchen table.
- Nothing is signed or decided here. Decisions about the house belong to the person whose house it is, and any adviser or solicitor will speak to them directly.
