Our regulatory status

House & Heirs gives estimates and information, not financial, mortgage, tax or legal advice. We are not a firm of solicitors, we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and we are not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Where you ask us to, we introduce you to regulated firms, and we tell you first if they pay us.

What that means for you

  • The check and the report are estimates and information. They do not tell you what to do, and they never recommend a product, a provider or a trust.
  • Because we are not regulated, complaints about us do not go to the Financial Ombudsman or the Legal Ombudsman. Our own complaints procedure is on the complaints page, and you can also contact Citizens Advice or Trading Standards.
  • When we introduce you to a firm that is regulated, that firm is responsible for the advice it gives, and its regulator’s protections apply to it.

How we are paid

Firms of advisers, brokers, will-writers, solicitors and funeral directors pay House & Heirs a monthly fee to offer the check under their own name. If you ask us to introduce you to a regulated firm and you take a product or service from them, that firm may pay us a fee or a share of its fee. We tell you before the introduction, we record that we told you, and it does not change what you pay them. You are free to use any firm you choose.

Care fees warning

Giving away or putting your home or savings into a trust does not protect them from a care-fee assessment. A council can treat you as still owning an asset if avoiding care charges was a significant reason for the transfer, with no time limit, and can recover the value from the person who received it. We do not sell or arrange “asset protection” trusts.

Equity release

A lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan is secured against your home, reduces the value of your estate and may affect means-tested benefits. Only an adviser authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority can recommend one. To understand the features and risks, ask them for a personalised illustration.
